The department has not answered. The same misunderstanding has now happened with three different people. The decision has been sitting there for a fortnight and every time you pick it up you put it down again.

Those are the same problem in different forms, and the lever in each of them is information. Mercury governs information, and a Mercury hour comes round several times in every day.

What Mercury actually governs

In the Western tradition Mercury governs knowledge, communication, clarity and discovery. Messages, learning, speech, contracts, commerce, decisions and the flow of information generally.

It is easier to recognise in motion; you find the correct contact, you say the right thing at the right moment, a misunderstanding clears, a hidden detail reveals itself, a decision becomes obvious and a delay resolves because one email finally gets through.

Mercury works fast and it answers through ordinary channels; a call, a message, a document, a chance encounter, a piece of knowledge that arrives and changes your next move. The tradition names it the messenger, and describes it as the force that opens doors locked by confusion.

It also rules trade, writing, study, technology and the endless networks of the modern world. The tradition holds it as essential for anyone who works with their mind.

The image at the top of this page is called Oracle. It was made on a Wednesday, in the hour of Mercury, with Mercury sitting in Virgo, the only sign in which it is strong twice over. Three days later it would pass through the exact heart of the Sun.

The information war

Conflict now is rarely physical. It arrives as reputation damage, as gossip and as sheer information overload, and there are two ways to lose it. Someone puts a lie about you into circulation, or you cannot master new information fast enough to stay useful.

Only the second of those belongs to Mercury. Lies and the person circulating them are Mars work, which is a different department entirely. Mercury's half is absorbing the material, learning the system, adapting to a technological shift that arrived faster than the one before it. The tradition holds Mercury as the accelerator for exactly that, and it is the half of the information war that ends more careers than slander does.

Mercury also governs the other side of the exchange, which is speech that carries. The pitch that lands. Words that convince rather than merely inform. The voice that takes heat out of a conflict instead of adding to it.

The one that works with all six others

Every planet has combinations it favours. Mercury is the exception, because it pairs with all of them: it clarifies both the target and the timing before anything else is aimed.

Clarity before pursuit, so Mercury sits before Venus. Truth before action, so Mercury sits before Mars. Each of the seven governs its own department, and Mercury is the one that tells you which department you are standing in.

What to do in a Mercury window

Mercury holds Wednesday, and Mercury hours come round several times in every other day of the week as well. The planetary hours are the layer underneath the days, and that article covers how to find yours.

The principle is simple. Do the ordinary thing at the moment its governing planet is open.

Messages and speech. The email you have rewritten six times. The message that has to be exactly right. Anything where the words themselves are carrying the weight.

Negotiation and interviews. Not the asking for more, which belongs to Jupiter. The wording, the back and forth, the clause you want changed and the sentence you use to change it.

Paperwork and bureaucracy. Read the contract. Lodge the form. Chase the department that has not replied. This is Mercury's ground and most people fight it at whatever hour their patience runs out.

Study and learning. Sit the exam, read the manual, take the course. The tradition holds Mercury as the accelerator for learning and for practical intuition.

Decisions at a crossroads. Make the choice you have been turning over. Thinking about it harder has already been tried.

Speaking to persuade. The pitch. The presentation where the words have to convince rather than inform. The conversation you need to take the temperature out of.

Finding out what is hidden. The conversation where you need the truth rather than agreement, from someone who may prefer not to give it. Lost documents, a detail being withheld, the missing piece of something you have been assembling.

What Mercury will not do, and the trap it sets

Mercury clarifies. It does not act, and that difference matters more here than anywhere else in the system.

Warmth belongs to Venus. Authority belongs to the Sun. If you need someone to stop, that is Saturn, and if the thing has to end, that is Mars. Mercury will explain a problem to you at length while it continues.

The tradition names the trap directly. When you already know the truth and what you need is force, do not keep reaching for more clarity in order to avoid acting. Understanding a problem is not the same as solving it, and more information is the most respectable way there is to delay.

Beyond timing

Timing is the layer you can use immediately and it costs you nothing. It is also the outermost layer.

The older tradition went further than choosing the hour. It spoke into the hour, addressing the planet directly with a specific request rather than waiting to see what the day would bring. Astrological Magic sets out that practice in full and gives the Mercury line eight operations with the exact wording for each.

Start with the hour. Find the current Mercury window for your location and send the message you have been rewriting.
