The current
Al-Tarf takes its name from two stars seen as the eyes of the great Arabic lion. One sits within the constellation Leo and one sits outside it, looking out from the border between two territories. That liminal quality is part of what this station carries. It is a threshold, but not the threshold of beginning that Al-Sharatain governs. This is the threshold before difficulty.
After the height of power in the eighth station, the ninth is a significant descent. The tradition lists it as inauspicious for travel, for love, for friendship, for harvest, for almost everything the preceding stations favoured. It governs obstruction and the approach of difficulty that has not yet arrived but is already visible to anyone paying attention. That does not make the station useless. It makes it honest. Every cycle has its difficult stations, and the Moon brings the warning before the hard stretch as reliably as she brings anything else.
The traditional image is a figure with hands covering the eyes. In this canon she is a queen with her hands raised to her face, not in grief but in the posture of someone choosing to attend to an interior reality rather than an exterior one. The gift of this station is not visible while it is running. It becomes clear afterwards. What was ended here does not return, what was released stays released, and what was cleared does not fill straight back up with the same material.
